Chords & Hammers Hey Fernando, If you're feeling comfortable with your chords and playing through chord progressions you'll want to spice them up a bit. How do you do that? With a few hammer-ons, of course! This is a very easy concept that will add a lot to your chord progressions if they're feeling a bit old and tired. The best way to achieve this hammer-on technique while playing multiple strings is to isolate the string that's receiving the hammer and quickly jump back into your strumming pattern. This allows you to articulate the technique and make it pop to add more character to your progression. In example 1, you'll be strumming a C chord and for a brief moment isolate the 4th string. Play this string open and swiftly use your 2nd finger to hammer onto the string. You'll hear the "E" note on the 4th string now loud and clear. Of course, if you want the note to be a little softer simply use less force as you hammer the note. Ex.1 E |-----------0----| B |-----------1----| G |-----------0----| D |-----0h2--------| A |--3-------------| E |----------------| You'll be strumming the whole D chord in the next example because the hammered notes occur on the high "E" string. Ex.2 E |--0h2----2h3-------2----| B |--3-------3--------3----| G |--2-------2--------2----| D |--0-------0--------0----| A |------------------------| E |------------------------| The final example transitions between a "G" and "C" chord. Both of these chords require a more accurate hammer-on simply because the hammered note is within the chord and not outside the shape like the "D" chord example. Ex.3 E |--3------------3--------0-------------0---------3---| B |--0------------0-------—1-------------1---------0---| G |--0------------0--------0-------------0---------0---| D |--0------------0--------2-------0h2-------------0---| A |--2------0h2------------3-----------------------2---| E |--3---------------------------------------------3---| Want To Learn More ...
