Remembering Jeff Beck

On Wednesday afternoon, I had just sent out the most recent edition of The Pick, and was wrapping up for the day, when I got an official e-mail with the subject line "Jeff Beck Statement."

I was stunned to read that he had passed away, following a battle with bacterial meningitis.

My immediate task was to write his obituary, and, truth be told, I struggled with it. How do you sum up a man who did so much, who made such a seismic impact on the guitar, in a single, concise article?

Frankly, it's easier to list the rock sub-genres that Beck didn't play a massive role in shaping. Blues-rock, psychedelic-rock, garage-rock, hard-rock, and even alt-rock guitar – as we know them – all owe Beck's singular, ever-evolving approach to the instrument a huge debt.

There is, in fact, no easy way to sum up the man, but either way, we've dedicated the majority of today's edition of The Pick to Beck – his work, his electrifying performances, his innovations, and what he meant to the guitar world.
