String Dampening Technique It's really nice not to play all the time and always having sounding coming from your guitar. By allowing space and letting other instruments come through or just hearing nothing but silence can be very powerful and creative. To do this we need to practice string dampening. Usually, I'll stop applying pressure with my fretting hand while still maintaining contact with the strings. At the same moment, I'll place the side of my palm of my strumming hand against the strings. This will leave no room for open strings to ring out unexpectedly. Try playing your strings with a downstroke and lay your palm down at the same time grabbing the fingerboard with your fretting hand. No sound should come through. Next, Play an A minor chord and dampen the strings on beats 2 &a mp; 4. This will usually leave space for the drummer to further accent his snare. Experiment string dampening on beats of your choice following any rhythm you can think of. Be creative! E |--0-------(x)--------0-------(x)----|
